Cantilever Racking Second Hand – What to Look Out For in the Future

The hardest part, before doing anything is figuring out what to call the cantilever rack. A lot of people search for a pipe rack or a lumber rack. We are glad to see that you figured out that what you need is cantilever rack because that means you are ready for the next conversation. The next things you need to consider when you are talking about cantilever rack are seismic testing, arm capacities, and whether or not you need a single or double-sided cantilever rack.

One of the first things to consider is if the cantilever rack has had proper seismic testing. It is true that not every place requires seismic calculations (like some low-seismic areas in the mid-west) but there are so many areas that do require it. Basically, if you have any kind of seismic activity then there is a high possibility that you need to have seismic calculations in order for you to obtain permits for your warehouse rack.

Given that more and more counties are requiring seismic calculations, you would think that every cantilever being sold out there would have it. Unfortunately, that is not always true. There are plenty of places where you can buy pipe rack, lumber rack, or cantilever rack that does not have any seismic testing done to it. That can be a nasty surprise because governing bodies can ask you to remove it and/or disassemble it. If that happens then you have to figure out where to put your product and you also have to store the cantilever rack as a disassembled rack. You also have to factor in the time and effort needed to disassemble that rack. You could have it tested but, in most cases, it is cheaper and faster just to get a new rack. Long story short, you should always ask if the rack has had seismic testing before you get the rack. You should ask for both new and used cantilever rack.

Not all cantilever rack arms are created equal. In fact, cantilever arms can have capacities that range from 1,500 to 5,000 lbs per arm. It makes sense to check which one of these is the case for your situation if you are looking at new or used racks. The truth is that many cantilever arms you will find support around 2,500 lbs as that gives most people the most bang for their buck. However, checking on this when you are buying a used cantilever rack is very important. You want to make sure that you are not setting yourself up for a disaster later.

Double or Single-Sided

Finally, you should know that you can get a double-sided or single-sided cantilever rack. An important thing to know is that you should check if the double-sided rack you are looking at is supposed to be a single rack. A rack that was meant to be a single-sided rack should not be made into a double-sided rack without the help of skilled professionals. A jury-rigged cantilever rack is dangerous for you, your employees, your customers, and your business. People can get hurt and people may start litigation because of it. Might as well make sure you are getting a good quality rack that will keep you out of trouble in the first place.
