05 Feb Heavy-duty Cantilever Racks and Questions You Should Ask
The first question to ask is always, “how heavy-duty is the heavy-duty cantilever rack that you need for your business.” The truth is that the cantilever rack is made to be heavy-duty just by design. It is because of the nature of the products it holds. You will find this kind of product used for pipes and timber. The fact that you are asking for heavy-duty cantilever means that you probably have something very heavy in mind. Most cantilever arms can support up to 1500 to 5000 pounds per arm. If you are really pushed into a corner then you could get a cantilever arm that is able to hold 18,000 pounds. The most likely you are going to encounter holds about 2500 pounds of weight. Keep in mind this is meant to be done as a uniform distributed load. Based on those numbers that we have just given you, we can say with a pretty good degree of confidence, that whatever amount of weight you need to hold with a cantilever rack, if properly designed, the rack can hold it. If you are wondering about the cantilever upright capacity then you should know that they can be designed to hold 5000 to 15,000 pounds per side. However, maximally you could theoretically go up to 56000 pounds per upright. The most common versions you are going to see in the marketplace have about 13,000 pounds of capacity per site.
Another issue that you need to keep in mind when getting a cantilever rack, whether or not it is heavy-duty, is that you will have to get the cantilever rack permitted. An unfortunate truth about doing business in the material handling industry is that not all businesses are capable or will help you get through the permitting process. You should know that most places require you to permit your cantilever rack before you use it. In fact, many places require you to have seismic testing or seismic calculations on the cantilever rack you use. Not all places can or will provide you with this information which could leave you with a cantilever rack that you cannot use and you will be forced to store. If you started to use that rack before the inspection then were told that you cannot use the racks then you will have to find a way to store all that product that was on the rack. It is a situation that is easily avoided by asking the company you are choosing to do business with if they can or will provide help with permitting in seismic testing if needed.
Another question you have to ask yourself is if you need a new rack or a used rack. You can find both in the marketplace but, as you see in the previous example, not all of them are going to be what you need for your business. Again, this is because of permitting issues. The other issue you can run into is if you can actually trust the previous owner. No one wants a rack that has taken impact damage. The problem is that not all impact damage is noticeable. You could have a destabilized cantilever rack and not know that you have it. If you are not experienced in the material handling industry then you might not know what to look for and miss it until it causes you problems. If you do choose to go with a used cantilever rack for your heavy-duty needs then you may want to make sure that you are dealing with a reputable business that puts their name on the line when they sell you a rack. Ideally, they will be doing the checking for you before you even know that you need the rack. It is the best way to make sure that you, your employees, and/or your customers are safe when they are around the rack. Otherwise, you should not have a problem getting a used cantilever rack or a new cantilever rack as long as you know you should ask about permitting issues, impact damage issues, and you have made sure that you are dealing with a reputable company.
The last question to ask is if you need a stop pin. If you are dealing with a very heavy load and you have a cantilever arm that is inclined then you probably want a stop pin. If your product is prone to rolling then having a stop pin is a must. It is protection for your employees, your customers, and you. No one wants to be pinned under a heavy weight and you probably want to avoid that sort of litigation anyway. Anything you can do to secure the load to the cantilever is probably a good idea just for legal issues alone.
