21 Feb Looking for Rack Installers? Here is What You Need to Consider First
If you are going to get pallet racking installed by installers or some other solution then you probably need to figure out what kind of rack you need in the first place. Most people, when they think of an industrial storage solution, think about selective rack without knowing that is what they are looking for in a pallet rack. You can be excused if that is you as well because you are not in the material handling industry. There is no reason why you would know that there are more styles of pallet rack for industrial storage solutions. However, there are other types of pallet rack available. The fact that there are other styles means you have more decisions to make before you start looking for people who can install your chosen rack.
“If you have a time issue then you should let someone who has the experience, the equipment, and the tips and tricks to bust this job out for you. It will take your people longer to figure out a system and what they need. If time is an issue then getting rack installation services is a good thing.”
If you are in need of following the FIFO methodology of inventory then you should have a pallet flow rack or gravity flow rack. The pallet flow rack makes sure that the oldest pallets or products are leaving your industrial or commercial shelving first. It makes use of gravity to drop the next pallet or skid into place when that item is removed. The product is removed from one side of the system and the product is loaded from the other side of the system. The cumulative effect is that older products leave first and newer products stay in the rack until it is time for them to be used.
If you have no need for that system then you can use a high-density storage solution like pushback rack. What does high density mean in this situation? It means there are a lot of pallets, skids, or products packed into a defined area in the system. It follows the last in-first out way of inventory. New products are loaded in the same place where the product is replenished. Therefore, the newest of the product, pallet, or skids are removed first. It is almost the reverse of the pallet flow rack especially because it follows the FILO method of storage.
If you are a business that has long heavy items it needs to store then a cantilever rack might be just what you need. If you having trouble picturing what constitutes a long heavy item then you just need to picture things like steel, lumber, and pipes. Cantilever racks have also been known to house things like old cars in the junkyard. They are very heavy duty racks that are very versatile. Hardware stores like Home Depot, Lowes, and others often use these racks as their shelving units. They tend to add some kind of shelf on top of the arms of the cantilever so that they can hold products for public viewing. You may also see this in use in IKEA where they are commonly used for holding furniture.

Finally, you have the selective rack which is the one you probably had in mind when you started to think about getting a pallet rack for your business. If you do not know what selective rack is then all you have to know is that it is most like the shelving units you find in your own home. You can place products you own on any shelf in any configuration you wish. It does not follow FIFO or LIFO methods unless you want it to do so. It does not use gravity to push the next product in line to the front like pallet flow/gravity flow or pushback racks do. They are, however, very simple to understand and use.
Once you have chosen one of those pallet rack styles for your business then you can ask the next question which is how fast does it need to go up? The question really comes down to if you want your employees to do it or if you want someone else doing it. If you have a young business then you probably will have your employees setting up the rack for use. If you do have your employees setting up the pallet rack of your choice then remember to follow all safety rules and regulations set forth by your local government. You also want to be as safe as possible so that no one gets hurt while it is getting assembled. If you need it done quickly, safely, and while your employees spend their time on something else that makes you money then you should have it professionally installed for you. If you have a time issue then you should let someone who has the experience, the equipment, and the tips and tricks to bust this job out for you. It will take your people longer to figure out a system and what they need. If time is an issue then getting rack installation services is a good thing. They also, if they are reputable, know the rules and regulations for doing the job so you do not have to worry about it. If you can spare the expense then that is probably the way to go.
