Robots are taking over and helping with warehouse optimization. A lot of people say this in fear but you should not be afraid. In fact, a little bit of automation can make your business a lot more profitable. The invention of pallet flow systems introduced systems of automation with no robotics. The only thing powering this method is gravity. However, you can go even further into the rabbit hole and automate the system even more.
Why spend time on warehouse optimization?
Safety is a good reason. The less a human has to touch a product the less they are in danger for a variety of reasons. A human may have to come in contact with a rack and, if it is not well made, the rack can be destabilized from contact from a forklift or a mishandled pallet. The contact may make the pallet rack or storage items fall. Pieces of clothing can get caught in the rollers if a human gets too close to the system or mishandles how the rack is meant to perform. A person can become distracted and miss important cues that could save them from getting hurt and so forth. Of course, they could get distracted and drive a forklift into the rack itself. There are a lot of problems that can arise from not automating a system that could, and maybe should be automated just for the sake of safety.
A machine can break down but it is very unlikely that you can disturb or distract that machine. It is there to do a job and nothing else. In fact, thinking about it, and borrowing knowledge from the basics of electronics, some of these machines do not have processors. The basics of electronics say that a machine may have a processor or a controller. Controllers do simple tasks while a processor handles complex tasks. It is the exact reason why your laptop or your computer has a processor and your toaster has a controller, at least the traditional toasters in the marketplace. The machines, in this case, have controllers because they only do one thing and one thing only. They do not have to process a bevy of information for the most part, although there are some that due have processors in the marketplace. The shuttles do not need processors because the range of their duties is not large enough to warrant it. They also do not wear clothes so there is nothing to get caught in gears or other areas.
Maintenance and Errors:
Generally, the machines are also built on to the storage system which means that the system is usually stable unless there was an error from the very beginning of production for this item. If the unit maintained then the machine will keep functioning as intended for a long time. It will become a very reliable, almost silent, worker. That worker is continuously making your processes faster and more efficient.
A machine also never gets tired which means it can do more work over a certain period of time than a regular human can do. It will not accidentally drop a pallet. Of course, this assumes the unit does not have damage or requires maintenance. Therefore, you do not have to worry about damage unless you are negligent in your duties as far as the upkeep of the machine is concerned.
Does this mean you should get rid of all your employees? Of course not, but, from a liability standpoint, subjecting your workers to less potentially dangerous situations can only help you avoid injuries to them and also speed up the workflow so that your company is more productive.
