16 Jan What Do I Put my Lumber on to Display it or Make It More Organized?
Starting a lumber yard is a daunting task. There are things you might need to know beyond just the technical knowledge to do the job. Sooner or later, you might even realize that leaving the product on the ground is not the best idea because the ground is dirty and it attracts bugs. Bugs can, literally, eat into your profit. It might also make some clients uncomfortable if they see the bugs. Of course, that depends on who your target audience is when you sell off your lumber. It also does not look good in pictures for your website if it just rained. Your product might look dirty and muddy which is not the message you want to convey to your customers. You can put it on a tarp but you want to look professional. Maybe you even want to present your company to someone who can invest in it and help it grow. You want to make a good impression. Sure, you like the grit and grime. But, you may have started to realize that you might want a forward-facing client-centric part of your business that you can use for things like investors or clients. You may want this to make them feel like your company is the true leader in the space, or at least, is more professional than the next guy. It is with this in mind that you want to consider your wood storage rack options carefully.
What is that T or E shaped thing that I have seen other people using for lumbar?
Long story short, the thing you are looking for is a Cantilever Rack. It resembles an “e” or “f” shape when there is no product on it or not a lot of product. The shape can exist on one side or the other. It is just one of the choices you will have to make in the future when you do decide to get one of these for your business. However, what you have seen is a cantilever rack.
What other types of decisions do I have to make?
In general, there are two common types of material cantilever racks can be made of when you get a rack. You can get a rack in either a structural or roll-formed format. The structured type uses steel beams. The roll-formed racks use coiled sheet metal. The sheet metal is rolled into the appropriate shape.
What does that mean for me?
If you can afford it then you should get the structural type of Cantilever rack. The structural type is known for being stronger in most cases. Exactly what you need if you are going to put a lot of lumber from your yard on this structure.
Could I just mix the styles?
It is not recommended and the two cannot fit on the same type of cantilever rack. If you choose one type over the other than you have to use that type for the whole thing. If you decide to change from rolled form to structural then you will have to sell off your rack and buy the other. The good news is that we also buy racks. You are not totally alone if you upgrade later. We may purchase yours or you if you can find someone to purchase your racks.
How do I know this is going to hold my lumber?
Cantilever racks can be built to hold nearly any capacity you need to have on the rack. What you do need to be careful of is that you make sure that the Cantilever rack has both arm capacity and upright capacity to handle the load you are going to put on it.
How do I know that the upright capacity can take the weight?
Most of them are developed to handle somewhere between 5000 to 15000 per side. The biggest ones can handle up to 56000 per cantilever upright frame. It is unlikely that you will have that much weight so you should be able to have one built that can withstand what you are asking it to hold.
You said per side. Does that mean that these can be double-sided?
Correct. Cantilever or wood storage racks can have two sides and making sure that you get close to the same weight distribution on both sides will help ensure stability for your rack system.
Is it possible to have a single-sided Cantilever?
Yes. You do not have to have a double-sided Cantilever system. Some people do choose to have a single side and it works just fine for them as long as they have the correct upright capacity and arm capacity.
I hear something about seismic testing, is that a thing?
Yes. Our wood storage racks feature seismic testing. Seismic testing means that the rack will have an easier time getting a permit in your location. However, we cannot speak about other companies’ racks. If you do choose to work with another company then you will have to ask them if they can help you get the testing and calculations done. If they cannot do so then you should move along because losing the use of your racks could be a very expensive proposition. You may not be able to use them and you could be asked to remove them which will probably cost you just as much as it was to have them made and installed.
