What You Need to Know About Racking for a Pallet or Skid

“If you are able to process your orders faster than your competitors then that might be a factor that allows a customer to choose you over your competitors. Therefore, selecting the right rack, getting your warehouse designed for maximum efficiency, and figuring out what type of inventory system you need to follow in your business can be very important for an advantage over your competitors.”

If you are looking for racking for your pallets or skids then the first question to ask is what kind of inventory system do you need to follow in your business. If you are a medical business or a food-based business then you probably have to use a first in-first out method with your inventory storage system. It is because you have to worry about the potency of your product or your product going expired before it is used or sold. If this is the case for your business then you should get a racking system that follows the FIFO system by design. If not then your options really open up if you do not need to follow the system. Therefore, it is very important to ask yourself if you should follow a first in-first out system or a system where you can follow the last in-first out method of storage.

The next thing to do once you figure out what type of storage system you need to have in your business, based on how your inventory system should work, is how to design your warehouse for optimal workflows. Again, if you have to follow a FIFO system then you should design your warehouse to minimize the amount of time that your products spend outside of refrigeration. Food sanitation roles generally say that a product should only be out of refrigeration for less than two hours in most locations. Therefore, making sure that your product can flow through the warehouse in a timely manner helps to make sure that you stay within this guideline. If you do not have to follow first in first out techniques then you could still optimize your warehouse for the movement of a certain product that you know sells or moves often. Therefore, you can get the product in and out of your facility as quickly as possible so you can move on to the next order. It is true that a lot of businesses that went into e-commerce with their older style warehouses found that they had logistical problems. It was because they were no longer moving just pallets of products but they were handling individual items. It is in these cases where warehouse design makes a lot of sense especially if you are optimizing for a certain product that can move individually or in large amounts at one time.1 The best way to do this is usually by getting a CAD warehouse design layout for your racking. It will allow you to figure out the foot traffic and how a product should move through your warehouse.

You will also have to select the type of racking that you will have in your warehouse. A lot of this choice has to do with the inventory system that is going to be used in your warehouse. For example, if you follow a first in-first out method then a pallet flow rack or a selective rack makes a lot of sense. If you do not have to follow FIFO methods then you have more choices open to you. You could use a high-density racking system like a pushback rack, a drive-in or drive-through rack, or you could just use the selective rack. However, you should choose the appropriate rack for your particular situation as that will optimize your business and may allow you to have a business advantage over your competitors.
