What You Need to Know About Warehouse Racking Protection

Warehouse Racking Protection

If you are looking for a warehouse racking protection solution then you are pretty smart. Racking protection can really save you or your employees from doing a lot of damage. Not only to the products but to yourself or themselves, in the case of your employees. Some of the more popular posts we have on this site have to do with the ever-popular warehouse collapses. It is true that everyone treats a warehouse collapse like we think of car crashes. It is bad but it is hard to look away at the same time. Some of these accidents are preventable with proper warehouse racking protection. Products that have to do with protecting racks take the impact of a forklift without damaging the rack. It is because the rack is located safely behind the protection solution. The pallet protection will absorb the impact. The protection takes the impact. The rack stays relatively safe. Of course, you should always check your safety pins and safety clips that exist on the rack that was impacted. A rack may look like it held together just fine. However, that does not mean that it is truly fine and without structural damage.

“Of course, you should always check your safety pins and safety clips that exist on the rack that was impacted. A rack may look like it held together just fine. However, that does not mean that it is truly fine and without structural damage.”

You have to ask yourself another question. You ask this question after you decide whether or not you are going to have warehouse racking protection. The question is if you want to give yourself the maximum amount of protection through the structure of the device? The other choice you would rather have the product stack the length of your rack instead. It is a good thing to protect your racks just for safety reasons. The stackable versions of pallet rack protection tend to be cheaper than the more structural designed pallet rack protection. The reason is obvious. There is a lot more time and effort put into designing a product that will provide optimal safety for your rack as opposed to a regular old column guard. Column guards are the stackable version of pallet protection that you see pretty often on most people’s pallet racks. There is nothing wrong with going with column guards as having anything is better than nothing. If you are looking for superior protection you may want to go with a more robust solution, however.

“In fact, a lot of these are specially designed so that the impact is dissipated before it ever reaches the structural metal of the rack itself. If you want superior protection for your warehouse racking then you should highly consider one of these proprietary made racking protection solutions.”

How many degrees of protection do you need around your pallet rack? Column guards are great at taking straight-on impacts on the pallet rack. However, an impact from a forklift may not be as simple as a front impact. You have to remember that forklifts lifting arms go inside of pallet racks. They do this in order to pick up a pallet or skid. The area that lifts the pallet off of the pallet rack is inside of the rack. Anytime they are maneuvering to get inside of that rack is a point where they could make contact and cause a problem or failure in the structure. A lot of the non-stackable versions of pallet protection offer a little bit more of a robust solution as far as the angle of attack. For example, the RAMGuard pallet protection product we carry is shaped like a cylinder. The only reason it does not offer 360° of protection is that you have to be able to put the product on the pallet rack somehow. Therefore, there has to be an opening in the cylinder so it can fit around the pallet rack. You will find an impact coming from within the pallet rack not common. Therefore, that much protection, or 360° of protection, is excessive in most businesses. Most of the angles of attack find themselves covered. However, you can have as much or as little protection as you choose from a solution.

Stackable vs Non-Stackable Solutions:

Most of these non-column guard pallet protection solutions feature well-made designs. They do not need to be stacked in order to be effective to their maximum capabilities, unlike standard column guards. Many of these brands use a proprietary blend of rubber and metal inside of the warehouse racking protection in order to dampen the impact of a forklift contact. In fact, a lot of these are specially designed so that the impact is dissipated before it ever reaches the structural metal of the rack itself. If you want superior protection for your warehouse racking then you should highly consider one of these proprietary made racking protection solutions. They are better at protecting your rack than a single column guard would be if it was to be impacted.
