You have enough on your plate as a laptop/desktop dealer/supplier or maker like deciding what components to use. Figuring out the profitability associated with using those components. You have to figure out how to ship it safely, across the country at times, to where it needs to go. There are a lot of logistics to think about and that did not even get into how you store the product until you need it. One of the best ways to do this is to get yourself some industrial-strength shelving units that can handle the job like pallet racks. Most laptop or computer-related businesses use selective rack but it is not the only pallet rack type you could choose. There are several different types but the one that most people use, and is the most common, is the selective rack. A selective rack is the most common because it is the most understandable of any type of laptop rack. It is similar to the shelving units you have in your house because it does not dictate how you organize your shelves. Other types such as a push-back rack system require you to load your products a certain way. The loading of products changes the way you pick products. For example, push back rack asks you to load and pick from the same opening. It means that any product that is going to leave from that rack is going to be the newest available. In other words, it follows the LIFO or last-in-first-out system. The upside of this type is that it allows you to store a lot of product in a defined space.
Another thing you may have to think about is your decking choice. A lot of laptop/desktop makers or dealers use wood support bars. However, this may not be the best solution because wood support bars can be flammable. If your support bars are flammable then you will not be able to stack as high as you could if they were not. Another issue that is of concern to local permit agencies is if the water from sprinklers can reach the bottom layers of your laptop rack where it could, possibly, put out any flames that have spread there. Therefore, you may have two strikes against you before you get going. You could, possibly, solve some of the problems by using metal support bars. They provide a similar experience to using wood support bars but are metal and do not burn as easily which your inspector will like when they come to see you. You also have other options like punch deck. You can see a full discussion of what is available by looking at this post we have on the site called, “What Pallet Decking is Right for Me?“. If you try to get a used pallet rack then you are likely to encounter wire mesh decking as this is the most common form around. Again, you can read more about it on that link mentioned previously. However, if you do end up using wire mesh decks then you may want warehouse plastic storage bins to help you store your items.
Do you use a forklift in your business? If you do then you will want to have safety products to protect your people and your products. If you are a larger dealer or maker of laptop/desktop products then that could mean half a million to millions of dollars of products on a shelf or a shelf with adjacent products. You will want to protect that product instead of losing it. You will, likely, get safety clips with your pallet rack. Safety clips are an effective method of making sure that your pallet rack stays where it should. However, they do tend to wear down and they do not always look like they are in disrepair or disconnected. They need to be checked often to make sure that they are working as intended. A good way to make sure that your pallet rack-level will stay in place is to also use safety pins as a backup. Finally, you should use column guards or RAMguards to make sure that contacts with your forklift do as little damage as possible. Column guards and RAMguard take the impacts for you as long as they are properly positioned. Many businesses put a column guard or RAMguard in strategic places. The safety products take the impact instead of your laptop rack. You can stack them on top of each other to cover your whole pallet rack but not many do that but you certainly could.
Do you want your manager closer to the action at all times? A modular office could be what you need in order to achieve just that thought. You can take a modular office and move it around as you need or as your need grows. You can move it with a forklift or, in some cases, a pallet jack. If you grow larger and get a new warehouse then you can take it with you. It is not attached to the building which can make it easier to get it past the permit agencies in most locations.
If you know that you want to store a lot of products then you should consider storing vertically. A good way to do that is by getting a mezzanine work platform. A mezzanine work platform adds to a second level to your warehouse without adding to the existing building. The fact that it is not attached to your building means that it is similar to the modular offices. Permits are easier to obtain without an attachment to the building.
A CAD warehouse design will support your business by allowing you to see where you might have problems with your current workflow. You will have several perspectives to see how everything flows together. You will be able to see if you have planned to have your pallet racks in the right places so that you do not anchor them and put them up. Putting up your racks in the wrong places can cost you a lot of time and aggravation. A CAD warehouse design can and will help your business make sure that it is set up for success.
Finally, we need to talk about getting the permits approved for your business. If you are going to stack vertically then you will need help figuring out what to do. It can be a daunting process. You will have to talk to a lot of serious local agencies. They will be making sure that you dotted your I’s and crossed your t’s. Luckily, we have a lot of experience doing this for you. We talk to these people all the time and we can talk to them on your behalf. It is what we specialize in and what we can help you get done.
