What is a Conveyor Ball Transfer Table?

Ball transfer tables are also known as ball transfer conveyors. They are material handling equipment designed for the omni-directional movement of products or packaging.  Each transfer table consists of a rigid steel plate mounted with individual ball transfers.  Each individual ball transfer involves a single large bearing supported by many smaller bearings in a single housing.

How does it operate?

Each individual ball transfer operates similar to a computer trackball mouse (only inverted). This allows for the fluid movement of product in any direction across the surface of the table.  When a flat-bottomed load is pushed over the top of a ball transfer table, the ball transfers allow it to smoothly be rotated or moved in any direction—reducing the effort needed to move the load.  Individual ball transfers can be added, removed or replaced as needed—extending the life and utility of the table itself.

What are they used for?

Ball transfer tables can be used for any application that requires quick and easy movement of products.  Commonly, heavy duty ball transfer bearings are used in assembly/production lines or in shipping/receiving lines.  They can be installed in any place where products need to be rotated, positioned or moved.  They can also be used in large systems where two or more conveyors converge or on adjacent conveyors where materials need transferred from one to the other.

Installation and Maintenance

Proper maintenance will extend the lifespan and efficiency of ball transfer tables. Here are steps to maintain your ball transfer tables effectively:

Regular Inspection:

  • Conduct checks to identify any signs of damage. Pay attention to the load-bearing balls and their external housings.
  • Inspect the seals and ensure they are intact to prevent contaminants from entering the tables.

  • Regularly clean the ball transfer tables to remove dust, debris, and other contaminants that can affect performance.
  • Use appropriate cleaning agents for steel and stainless steel components to avoid corrosion.

Apply lubricants to the ball transfer tables to maintain smooth movement. This is especially important in high-temperature environments or where there is frequent handling of cargo.

Replacement of Worn Components:

  • Replace any worn or damaged tables immediately to prevent disruptions in production.
  • Keep an inventory of replacement parts for rapid maintenance and reduce downtime.

Technical Support and Upgrades:

  • Consult with the manufacturer for any technical support or material upgrade options.
  • Consider upgrading to tables with patent features or improved designs for better performance.

By following these installation and maintenance steps, customers can ensure their ball transfer tables function optimally, providing reliable and smoothly operating conveyor roller systems. This process not only enhances the service life of the tables but also improves overall production efficiency.
